  • Electric Horse™ is supporting the development of a comprehensive energy strategy designed to enable sustainable operations across the site.
  • The developent will include solar generation, battery storage, alongside anaerobic digestion and a combined heat and power (CHP) system.
  • Working with Electric Horse™ Local Partners to deliver.

Electric Horse™ is proud to be playing a key role in shaping the energy strategy for Pickstock Telford’s transformational new beef processing facility at Ecclefechan, Dumfries & Galloway.

Construction has begun on the £24 million-plus development, which sets a new benchmark for modern food production by integrating sustainability, energy resilience and operational efficiency.

Working closely with the project team, Electric Horse™ is supporting the development of a comprehensive energy strategy designed to enable sustainable operations across the site. The strategy will maximise onsite renewable generation, cut carbon emissions and strengthen long-term energy security. This includes a substantial roof-mounted solar PV installation and commercial battery system that generates significant renewable electricity to power the facility.

The project has sustainability designed at its core, combining solar generation, battery storage, alongside anaerobic digestion and a combined heat and power (CHP) system. Together, these systems will create a highly efficient, lower-carbon operation, from processing and refrigeration through to heating and power supporting Scotland’s ambitions for a more sustainable food supply chain.

By harnessing otherwise unused roof space, the solar PV system will generate clean energy exactly where it is needed. This reduces reliance on grid electricity and lowers operating costs, showing that sustainable operations and commercial performance can go hand in hand.

For Electric Horse™, the project showcases its expertise in integrated energy planning for large-scale industrial developments working with Electric Horse™ Local Partners to deliver well-designed energy systems at the foundation of sustainable, resilient operations.

Simon Underwood Director, Electric Horse™, commented “Projects like Ecclefechan represent the future of industrial energy. By combining renewable generation with intelligent energy management and other low-carbon technologies, businesses can significantly reduce their environmental impact while improving operational resilience. We’re delighted to be supporting Pickstock Telford on a development that will ensure a low carbon, sustainable operation whilst delivering economic and environmental benefits to the region.”

As the project progresses towards its planned opening in 2029, Electric Horse™ remains committed to delivering an energy solution that supports both the commercial success and sustainability ambitions of this landmark development.

Frequently asked questions

What is an Anaerobic Digester?

Anaerobic Digesters break down organic waste like food scraps, manure, and sewage inside sealed, oxygen-free tanks using microorganisms. This natural biological process produces two main outputs: biogas (mostly methane and carbon dioxide) for energy, and digestate (a nutrient-rich bio-fertilizer)
